Peugeot 4007 HDI auto road test report

Peugeot 4007 2.2 HDI 156 GT FAP DCS auto

Peugeot 4007 2.2 HDI 156 GT FAP DCS auto

What is it?

LATEST addition to Peugeot’s off-roader range – 4007 gets a powerful 156bhp 2.2-litre diesel engine, hooked up to a six-speed twin-clutch automatic gearbox. However desirable this may be, it takes the price of the flagship GT to a hefty £28,325. A lot of money for a Peugeot, putting it into competition with Audi’s Q5.

What’s hot?

  • For a large SUV, CO2 emissions are very impressive…
  • …and the auto only adds 7g/km over the manual taking it to 192g/km
  • The ‘box is slick on the move too and responsive enough for overtaking
  • Neat F1-style steering wheel paddles add some driver involvement
  • Diesel is punchy, more so than the 0-62mph time of 12.5secs suggests
  • Fuel economy decent at 38.7mpg
  • Handling is car-like with accurate steering and good body control
  • Plenty of space inside
  • Enough off-road ability for most owners

What’s not?

  • Auto box can be hesitant from standstill and indecisive too…
  • …getting caught between gears at low speed
  • Even after several years, those looks are still questionable
  • Cabin quality not up to the price tag…
  • …which is just too high
  • Doubts over residual values
  • High company car tax

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

The 4007 boasts a decent diesel engine and car-like handling, but the benefits of the auto box are less clear. It can be caught out at low speed -and adds too much to the 4007’s price. We’d look further down the range at a manual version, or plump for Hyundai’s Santa Fe.
