The ability to call the RAC should go some way towards relieving range anxiety for EV drivers

The RAC intends to analyse the pilot mobile charger and if it is a success roll out more units to busy urban areas – in similar fashion to the 10 mobile tyre-fitting vans introduced in response to manufacturer trends of not including spare wheels on new cars.

RAC spokesman Tim Hartles believes that as the electric vehicle market develops, the need for a mobile transportable energy source is becoming more important, not only to reduce ‘range anxiety’, but also to provide temporary cost-effective power for electric cars.

“Whether it’s at the side of a road in an emergency, or in a car showroom, portable power that is flexible, available and mobile is very much in demand so we wanted to invest in the required technology to make sure the RAC was completely ready to meet this need,” Hartles says.

He also believes that the RAC being able to give a vehicle a quick charge to get it going again will not only put motorists at ease but make the purchase of EVs more acceptable to company car managers and businesses.
