Telematics systems allow business car managers to see where their vehicles are, and to monitor driver behaviour. Savings come in areas such as fuel efficiency, insurance and expense claims

THE RAC has just launched its impressive telematics service – and claims it could save SME businesses with fleets as small as 15 vehicles more than £23,400 each year.

RAC Telematics technology can be installed in just a few minutes and allows a business to track the location, mileage and driver behaviour of each vehicle it owns.

An SME with a small fleet of just 15 company cars could save in excess of £23,400 per year

The accurate mileage records can be used to help with both business and private mileage expense claims.

Each in-car unit is no bigger than a matchbox but in the event of an accident or breakdown it enables business car managers to pinpoint any of their vehicles.

The ‘driver score’ function on the system can also be used by companies to save up to 15% on annual fuel bills as it monitors how efficiently their vehicles are being driven. Those drivers not scoring high enough can be encouraged to drive more efficiently.

The cost of the system is just a few pence per day per car and the RAC says it will help companies lower their insurance premiums because it allows insurers to use data on driver behaviour, car condition and mileage to more accurately tailor premium.

Another benefit in the future will be predicting potential breakdowns before they happen, saving time and money.
