Renault’s long-running player in the family hatch arena has had a facelift. But it’s the running costs that catch the eye

What is it?

You’re looking at the Renault Megane, the company’s long running Astra/Focus rival, updated for 2014 with fresh styling touches, a range of engineering and equipment changes, and some keener pricing.

The new look front end, which brings the Megane in line with the likes of the Clio and Captur, is the most obvious starting point. It’s a design package built around new bumpers, bonnet, lights and vent grilles, all set up to give the Megane a sharper, more contemporary edge.

It’s incredibly frugal – 81mpg – and the company car tax bill is a measly £42 a month

As before, the Megane comes in a multitude of forms – hatch, coupe, tourer, coupe-cabrio – and with a wide choice of engines.

The 2014 update package adds a new petrol 1.2 TCe 130 EDC to the line-up, but here we’re looking at the well-proven and frugal 1.5 dCi 110 engine, mounted in the Megane hatch, both of which have a big central role to play in Renault’s UK company car strategy.

This 1.5 turbodiesel (with Stop & Start) offers excellent 80.7mpg economy with 90g/km CO2 in this latest shape Megane.

Throw in the resulting 13% company car tax rate and £1200 sliced off the price versus the previous range and your BIK drops nicely. You can see how the Megane’s been re-worked to keep it on the pace within UK’s ever competitive volume company car market.

Question is, though, is it all enough?
