CONCEPT-backed Georgie Twigg and the Team GB Women’s Hockey Team have proved triumphant in the Rio Olympics 2016 as the Road to Rio turned Gold for Concept’s Georgie!
Throughout the tournament Team GB Women’s Hockey Team were unbeaten, winning every single Olympic game. They managed to beat world number 1 the Netherlands in a nerve-wrecking final that came down to a penalty shoot-out.
Georgie’s Road to Rio started two years ago when Concept Vehicle Leasing and Surrey Independent Advisers joined forces to sponsor the local Team GB and Surbiton Hockey athlete with a BMW 1-Series to support her daily training.
Concept MD Paul Bulloch said: “Absolutely delighted to see Georgie Twigg and Team GB’s Women’s Hockey team win Gold in Rio. The whole team were outstanding throughout and we couldn’t have dreamed for a better result when we kicked off our support for Georgie Twigg two years ago.
“Following her progress has been a delight for our whole team and we are just so proud that one of our local Surbiton athletes has gone so far. She has put in so much hard work and dedication, congratulations Georgie you deserve it!”
Georgie said: “Wow what a fantastic experience. I still don’t think it has all sunk in! Whilst out in Rio we were in this little bubble shielded from all social media so arriving back in Heathrow on Tuesday was crazy. There were so many people there to greet us which was amazing to see – there was even some kids in full Surbiton kit!
To have won every game whilst out there and to have come home with the Gold medal is just an absolute dream come true. It was always going to be a close affair against the Dutch and we certainly made it an exciting final to watch!! I felt so confident though when we went to penalty shuffles as we’d practised a lot for them and had Maddie in goal who just loves them!
It was brilliant to have so many family and friends out there supporting us. I loved having my parents and my brother out there the whole time and they really enjoyed themselves with all the other supporters. I could always hear them chanting and cheering me on and it definitely helped!
“I was definitely ready to come home by the end of it. We’d been out there for a month and I was just looking forward to some home cooked food and my own bed!
“The village was really cool and Team GB had decorated our apartments really well with brilliant extra facilities e.g. ice baths, stretching area, BBC and lots more. With our tournament spanning the whole two weeks of the Olympics we were fully submerged in it so we didn’t get to go to any other sports.
“But you really did feel in one big team seeing the success of other GB athletes and the medal table in the reception filling up each day. It was amazing to be a part of that and everyone was so supportive of one another.”
Brendan Kearns of Surrey Independent Advisers praised “A stupendous effort”.
He said: “Sponsorship with Concept of our own ‘Georgie Girl’ has been a real education. Witnessing first hand her own Road to Rio with the Team has given a great insight to the dedication, hard work and sacrifices that make up this success.
“Georgie has been so gracious with her time and support to us locally in Surbiton and we share in the Team’s overwhelming victory.
“Watching the game and knowing one of the players first hand added a new dimension to the nail biting tension of that Final. Georgie, we are looking forward to seeing that medal!
“With our friends at Concept we also need to thank the members and committee of Surbiton Hockey Club too who have been very supportive and gracious in raising the profile of hockey in our local community.
“Georgie has put in so much hard work and training to get there and it has finally paid off. The London Olympics offered up the Bronze medal and Georgie has been hungry for the Gold Medal ever since. Congratulations Georgie!”
