Back home after a 400 mile round trip, and still over half a tank of diesel left

TRIPS to Cambridge from south Wales are an occasional part of my private and business lives, so, give or take the odd detour, I know how far it is, and how much it costs.

Did my sums, and we’d just topped 64mpg!

My benchmark is, or was, a Saab 93 which uses about 7 gallons for the return trip: 57mpg – pretty good.

(Why do I know this stuff? Because I’ve learned the hard way to record all my business mileage that’s why. Feels a bit sad to begin with but you get used to it – little pad, pen, all organized.)

So didn’t the SEAT Leon come up trumps last week!

It’s just over 400 miles from here. I left with a full tank and topped up when I got back. Did my sums, and even without the sixth gear that my hand still insists on looking for we’d just topped 64mpg! The Leon’s computer pretty much agreed.

Nit-pickers will say there was little traffic and it was all motorway or dual-carriageways, but nor was there any hanging about or trying to see how good we could get either. Just a normal journey.

Cost in diesel? Just short of £40, or 10 pence per mile, and since there were two of us I reckon that’s pretty cheap travel. Just don’t tell the chancellor.
