What is it?

POSSIBLY the most business-friendly Yeti on sale – if you do mostly urban miles. It’s certainly the Yeti with the lowest company car tax rate. Latest version of Skoda’s SUV may have a tiny 105bhp 1.2-litre turbo engine but it’s not short on peformance – and it’s very cheap to run too. Only available in front-wheel drive form the likeable SUV is a great alternative to a regular family car. Tested here in luxurious Elegance trim at £17,995.

What’s hot?

  • That little engine. It’s punchy around town and smooth too
  • Can hold its own pretty well on the motorway
  • Frugal at 44.1mpg and cheap on company car tax with 149g/km CO2
  • Comfortable drive with a high seating position and soft ride
  • The cabin is enormous with 1,760 litres of all-out loadspace
  • Seats can be folded flat easily
  • Spec has panoramic roof, climate control and parking sensors
  • Looks will appeal to those after something a bit different
  • Dealer service is first class
  • Strong residuals

What’s not?

  • There’s quite a lot of body roll in corners
  • Long distance drivers will want the extra torque of the diesel
  • With two-wheel drive only, not a car for off-roaders
  • Some buyers will still be put off by the badge
  • Elegance may bring lots of kit but it’s pricey

This Yeti is proof that you don’t need a big engine to get big performance. Add that pace to an easy driving experience, low running costs, a raised seating position and huge cabin and you’ve got a brilliant family holdall. Those doing mostly motorway miles will be better off with a diesel, but anyone who spends time in and out of town should have a look.
