New Renault Trafic van test

Renault Trafic SL27

Renault Trafic SL27dCi 90

What is it?

Facelifted version of Renault’s stylish panel van, in short-wheelbase, low-roof guise.

What’s hot?

  • New, more powerful 90bhp and 115bhp 2.0-litre diesel engines
  • Euro 4 engines cleaner with more torque
  • Body still looks funky and distinctive
  • Every bit as modern as newly-launched Transit, Ducato and Crafter rivals
  • New six-speed Quickshift6 transmission gives 5% improvement in mpg
  • Driving position is the most car-like of any panel van
  • Very comfortable on longer journeys

    What’s not?

    • Cab interior is not as well thought-out as new Ford Transit
    • Facelift? What facelift? It’s almost impossible to tell new Trafic from old
    • Low-power versions are underwhelming with a load…
    • …you’re better off with the 115bhp 2.0-litre, or better still the 2.5 units

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

Trafic changed the game in terms of van styling – and it’s still fresh enough to hold its own. But check for deals on near-identical Vauxhall Vivaro and Nissan Primastar before buying.
