Tax: company car taxation table

If you want to know how much benefit-in-kind tax – known as company car tax – you will pay on your business car, use this table to assist you. The figures shown are the CO2 emissions sorted into bandings. Read along to work our your car’s tax banding depending if it’s petrol or diesel. If your car’s CO2 emissions fall between bandings, round the number down to work out the tax band. For example, a petrol car emitting 163g/km would be in the 20% tax band for 2008/09 tax year.

Changes for 2008/09 tax year

  • New low emissions tax band Cars with emissions below 120g/km will be taxed at 10%
  • Qualifying low emission diesel cars will be taxed at 13% (10% + 3% diesel surcharge)
  • Exception from 3% surcharge if the vehicle is Euro IV compliant and registered prior to 1 January 2006, there is no 3% surcharge
  • Hybrid vehicles with emissions above 120g/km qualify for the existing 3% discount introduced for the 2006/07 tax year
  • Bi-fuels with emissions above 120g/km qualify for the existing 2% discount introduced for the 2006/07 tax year
  • Electric cars taxed at 9%
