Volvo technology test cars
Business Car Manager was at Volvo’s recent future technology demo. How close is the driverless car?

ISN’T valet parking just fantastic? Well, in five to ten years’ time Volvo reckons every one of its cars could be fitted with its very own personal valet – a system that allows you to get out of the car at your destination and send the car off to find a free parking space.

Business Car Manager was at an exclusive event in Gothenburg, Sweden where this technology was showcased alongside a few other high-tech gizmos that could be on your next company car, such as semi-autonomous motorway driving and pedestrian detection in darkness.

Volvo looks to a time when you car will talk to car parks. You just leave it outside and it’ll park itself

Self-parking

First up is the one that we’re wishing for most – autonomous parking.

Volvo Self park app
An app on your smartphone will bring your car back to you from the parking slot

Volvo wants to have car parks that can talk to the cars and let them know if there’s a free space. Once that information is available owners can leave their cars in a designated drop off spot just outside the car park and it’ll drive off to find a space.

Using its array of sensors and cameras, it can avoid pedestrians and other traffic before locating a space and reversing in.

Once you’ve finished your day at work, your flight has landed at the airport or you’ve simply finished shopping you can get your smartphone out and call your car to come and get you from the place you dropped it off.

Just in case you’ve left something in your car you get a notification saying where it’s parked, too, so you can always find it if you need to.
