Company car drivers: no change in business mileage rates

COMPANY car drivers have an updated set of figures for company car mileage rates from HMRC – known as Advisory Fuel Rates – for use from December.

But don’t get too excited.

If you’ve been looking worriedly at the price of fuel on the forecourts, then don’t expect any help from HMRC.

The company car business mileage rates remain as the previous quarter for drivers of petrol and diesel company cars.

According to the AA Fuel Price Report, both petrol and diesel forecourt prices dropped in November.

Average petrol prices were 135.1ppl in November; diesel prices 141.9ppl.

The only rise in company car mileage rates – by 1p per mile – is for LPG-fuelled company cars.

Below are the updated company car business mileage rates.

New Advisory Fuel Rates from 01 December 2012 for petrol and LPG cars

  • Engine size 1400cc or less: 15p (petrol); 11p (LPG)
  • 1401cc to 2000cc: 18p (petrol); 13p (LPG)
  • Over 2000cc: 26p (petrol); 18p (LPG)

Advisory Fuel Rates from 01 September 2012 for diesel cars

  • Engine size 1600cc or less: 12p
  • 1601cc to 2000cc: 15p
  • Over 2000cc: 18p

The updated Advisory Fuel Rates can be used to claim tax-free company car business mileage – or, if a company pays for all fuel used – to repay private mileage in a company car.
