This is the cleanest and most economical Golf ever made – and with none of the performance sacrifices that used to accompany overtly green motoring.

It’s the most economical model ever of that inherently economical breed – the diesel Golf

What is it?

This VW Golf BlueMotion 1.6 takes to the stage as the most efficient production Golf yet, offering CO2 emissions of just 85g/km.

It’s a car with stellar economy numbers too. VW is quoting combined economy of 88.3mpg plus an amazing theoretical range of 970 miles on a single tank.

88.3mpg and company car tax as low as £44 a month

As VW’s diesel technology continues to evolve so this latest BlueMotion comes with 15 per cent better fuel economy than the previous generation, itself a notably lean and green machine with CO2 emissions set at 99 g/km.

To improve the formula, VW has further fine-tuned the Golf’s aerodynamics, reducing drag by nearly 10 per cent while having the car sit 15mm lower than before.

Super low resistance tyres, longer gearing and lower weight (body and running gear cut by 63kg) are also among the latest round of tweaks.

Under the bonnet lies the latest spec 1.6-litre 110PS common rail TDI with reduced internal friction and a mass of state-of-the-art engineering to reduce emissions and improve consumption.  Stop/Start and battery regeneration system are present, too.

Net result is a torquey four cylinder 16 valve unit that produces 5PS more than non-BlueMotion models and serves up nearly 90mpg economy (in official tests).

Naturally, the company car tax numbers are a little bit special too, with 13% company car tax banding BIK and P11D of £20,280. For a 20% tax payer, the bill is just £43.92 per month, while it’s still only £87.92 for those in the 40% bracket.

So, looking good but how does it all stack up on the road?
